About us

ThermoInk has worked from Jacobs in Durban since 2008, supplying thermochromic and security inks for packaging across South Africa. We support packaging converters with practical testing, colour control and dependable deliveries.

Built in Jacobs for South African packaging lines

ThermoInk started in Jacobs, Durban with a simple focus: make inks that help packaging do more than carry a label or colour. For temperature-sensitive packs, our thermochromic systems give a clear visual change when heat or cold reaches a set point. For authenticity and brand protection, our security inks add markers that are hard to copy and easy to verify on press or in the field.

We work with converters, printers and packaging teams in KwaZulu-Natal and nationwide, from small trial runs to regular production. The reality of South African packaging is varied. Coastal humidity in Durban can affect drying. Inland sites often deal with dust and load-shedding. We keep those conditions in mind when we assess a job, from substrate choice through to curing and final handling.

What has stayed constant since 2008 is our preference for direct, useful work. Clients bring us a pack requirement, a press issue or a compliance concern, and we respond with testing, sample making and production support that fits the job at hand.

What we value on every job

Our values are practical, not decorative. We are careful with formulation, clear about what a product can do, and honest where a pack needs more testing before full production. That approach saves time and reduces waste, especially when a converter is balancing tight margins, short lead times and specific customer requirements.

  • Consistency from batch to batch, so print teams can run with less adjustment
  • Clear technical communication, especially during trials and press startup
  • Responsible use of materials, with a focus on fit for purpose output
  • Respect for deadlines, because packaging schedules are often fixed weeks ahead
  • Support that continues after supply, not only at the first quotation stage

We also know that packaging is part of a wider chain. If a carton, label or sachet must survive transport from Durban to Johannesburg, or sit in a hot storeroom in Gqeberha, the ink system needs to be checked against that full route. That is why our work usually starts with the conditions, not just the colour.

How our team works together

ThermoInk is led by Sibusiso Mthembu, with each member of the team carrying a clear area of responsibility. Shaun October handles technical sales and helps clients translate a brief into a workable ink specification. Lindokuhle Dlamini manages production, Pieter van Wyk focuses on security ink systems, Nomfundo Khumalo leads the colour lab, and Jason Pillay coordinates national logistics. The team structure matters because packaging problems rarely sit in one department only.

When a client sends through a query, we look at the substrate, the print method, drying conditions and the required effect. If needed we prepare drawdown panels, run rub resistance checks or set up UV verification steps. For a new pack, we may also make a trial batch so the client can test it on their own line before committing to volume. That hands-on process helps reduce surprises at conversion stage.

  • Colour Matching for repeatable pack appearance
  • Threshold Tuning for the exact temperature response needed
  • Adhesion Tests on paper, film and coated stocks
  • Rub Resistance Checks for handling and transit
  • UV Verification Setups for security checks and line-side control

Because our base is in Jacobs, we are close to Durban South industrial routes and can move quickly when a job needs attention. For out-of-town clients, Jason coordinates supply so deliveries reach the right plant, depot or converter without unnecessary delays.

Testing before production is the normal process

We do not treat testing as an extra. It is part of the job. Packaging inks must work on the actual material, under the actual press conditions, with the actual drying time available. A sample may look perfect on a proof sheet and still need adjustment once it reaches a fast web line or a folding carton line with different heat settings.

Our test process helps clients understand how the ink behaves before full production starts. We check whether the colour change triggers at the right point, whether the printed area holds up under rub, and whether the ink bonds properly to the selected coating or substrate. If there is a mismatch, we adjust the formula or the application method and test again.

This is especially useful for temperature-sensitive goods, chilled packaging, and branded packs that need a clear security cue. In South Africa, transport and storage conditions vary a great deal between provinces. A pack leaving Jacobs for Cape Town or Pretoria may face very different humidity and heat conditions along the way, so we test with that reality in mind.

Security inks that support brand protection

Security printing is about more than making a pack look technical. It has to give a practical verification method for the brand owner, the converter and sometimes the end customer too. Our security ink work covers visible and low-visibility features, depending on the application and the level of control required.

We often design security patterns in steps, starting with the intended use and the available printing process. From there we build a solution that can be checked with UV light, viewed under specific angles, or confirmed through a controlled pattern or code. The aim is to keep the solution suitable for production, not too difficult to print, and reliable enough for repeated use.

  • Security Pattern Design matched to the pack and print process
  • Coating Compatibility checks for coated and uncoated stocks
  • Production Troubleshooting when a line needs technical support
  • Batch Retain Library for reference and repeat work

For us, good security work is quiet and practical. It should help the pack do its job without slowing the line or confusing the operator. If a client needs a system that fits into a standard packaging run, we build around that reality.

Nationwide supply with local accountability

ThermoInk supplies packaging converters across South Africa, with area coverage that includes Jacobs, Durban South, Pinetown, Prospecton, Cape Town, Gqeberha, Johannesburg and Pretoria. That network is useful only if the process behind it is dependable. We keep track of the order from the first enquiry through to dispatch and follow-up, so clients know who is handling the work and where it stands.

South African packaging businesses face different pressures in different places. Some sites need faster response because of short production windows. Others need help with municipal compliance, storage space, or managing stock during power interruptions. We plan supply and support with those conditions in mind, and we try to keep things simple for the client.

Clients reach us through the enquiry form on our contact page, which keeps the first conversation neat and traceable. From there we can discuss the pack, the required effect, the number of metres or units involved, and the best way to move forward. If a sample run is needed, we will say so. If the brief can be met with a standard system, we will say that too.

Why clients keep coming back

Clients return to ThermoInk because we stay focused on the practical side of packaging. They want ink that performs, a team that answers technical questions properly, and supply that fits production schedules. We have grown by doing the basics well: good formulation, careful testing, clear records and reliable delivery.

Our work is rooted in packaging, not general print supply, so we understand the pressures on converters and brand teams. A colour change must be noticeable but controlled. A security feature must be useful but not difficult to run. A batch must repeat well when a client comes back six months later with the same spec. That is the standard we work to.

ThermoInk is built around long-term support. If a product needs refining, we refine it. If a production team needs troubleshooting on site or by sample, we work through it. That is how we prefer to do business, and why so many conversations start with a single trial and end up becoming regular supply.
