Colour Lab Services

ThermoInk backs supply with technical colour and application support from its Durban colour lab. These services help converters shorten trial cycles and protect print consistency.

What our colour lab supports for packaging converters

Our colour lab in Jacobs works with packaging converters that need repeatable results on cartons, labels, wraps and other printed packs. If you are matching a new shade, checking ink hold-out on a coated substrate, or confirming a security feature before a full run, we can support the process from first drawdown to production sign-off.

Most clients come to us when a job has tight colour tolerances, a temperature cue that must trigger at the right point, or a security mark that needs to be visible under the correct lighting. We also assist when stock changes, humidity shifts in Durban, or a supplier changes the base material and the print response moves off target.

How to choose the right lab service

Not every issue needs the same test. A press that is running a new substrate may only need coating compatibility checks and adhesion testing, while a launch with a temperature-sensitive pack may need threshold tuning and UV verification set-ups as well. If you are not sure where to start, we look at the print method, substrate, coating and end use before recommending the next step.

  • Colour Matching: for shade targets, brand standards and repeat orders
  • Threshold Tuning: for thermochromic triggers that must activate at a set temperature
  • Adhesion Tests: for film, board and coated surfaces
  • Rub Resistance Checks: for packs that move through distribution and retail handling
  • UV Verification Setups: for security features and inspection checks

Trial batches, drawdowns and press startup support

Before a large production run, we can prepare drawdown panels and trial batch material so the press team can confirm appearance, drying behaviour and handling. This saves time on machine startup and reduces the chance of stopping a run to correct a shade that was close, but not quite right. For converters working under municipal timing pressures or with limited press windows, that preparation matters.

We also support press startup with practical notes on mix ratios, application order and expected finish. Where needed, we keep batch retain samples in our library so a future repeat order can be checked against the same reference. It is a simple control that helps protect consitency across reprints and seasonal jobs.

Security ink design and verification support

Security inks are used to help protect packaging from copying and tampering, especially where brand protection or traceability matters. Our security ink specialist works with clients on pattern design, UV-reactive features and verification methods that fit the packing line and the end user’s inspection process. The aim is to keep the feature useful in practice, not just on paper.

For some jobs, that means creating a mark that is easy to verify with the right light source. For others, it means building in a more discreet pattern that supports internal checks without changing the pack’s look. Either way, the lab checks the print response, the coating behaviour and the viewing conditions before the job moves forward.

Our Durban team and national supply support

ThermoInk is based in Jacobs, Durban, and we deliver to packaging converters nationwide, including Pinetown, Prospecton, Cape Town, Gqeberha, Johannesburg and Pretoria. Jason Pillay manages national logistics so tested material and approved batches move out in good time, while the lab team keeps records that are easy to follow when a repeat order comes in.

  • Sibusiso Mthembu: Managing Director
  • Shaun October: Technical Sales Manager
  • Lindokuhle Dlamini: Production Manager
  • Pieter van Wyk: Security Ink Specialist
  • Nomfundo Khumalo: Colour Lab Lead
  • Jason Pillay: National Logistics Coordinator

This mix of lab, production and logistics support means clients can move from enquiry to testing, then into supply without chasing different people for every step. It also helps when deliveries must line up with production schedules, especially on jobs with short lead times or multiple pack sizes.

How to send a job to the lab

Clients can reach us through the enquiry form on our contact page and send through the pack details, target colour, substrate and any special handling requirements. If you have a sample pack, a print spec or a previous batch reference, include that as well. The more detail we get up front, the faster we can advise on the right test or setup.

For best results, tell us whether the job is for short-run sampling, repeat production or a new product launch. We can then plan the right checks, from rub resistance through to security verification, and keep the process practical for your press team and your schedule.

Questions we get asked

Do you only work with large converters?

No. We support small and large packaging converters, including short runs, repeat orders and launch work.

Can you help if our substrate has changed?

Yes. We can check coating compatibility, adhesion and colour response on the new material before full production.

Do you keep records for repeat batches?

Yes. We keep batch retain samples and reference notes so approved work can be matched more easily on future runs.
